Reception:

February 5th, 2008 6pm - 9pm

Flow - a smooth uninterrupted movement or progress

Zone - a temporary state of heightened concentration that enables peak performance

'Flow' in addition to the Merriam-Webster definition above is now widely referenced as a concept proposed by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi: a mental state of operation in which the person is fully immersed in what he or she is doing, characterized by a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity.  The Zone usually refers to athletes. The terms seem interchangeable and most artists are intimately familiar with this state. This annual exhibition series will give artists from around the world a chance to freely interpret both concepts using their usual form of expression and give their perspective on this fundamental part of the creative process.

About Jose Polet: Born in 1948 in Belgium, José Polet is a self taught visual artist living in France (Alès). He graduated in Journalism and Social communications sciences at the ULB, or Université Libre de Bruxelles, his first steps in the art world were made as a satiric writer. He published " L'autre Belgique" the other Belgium with Yvon Godefroid at Vokaer editions. Jose Polet is a member of the "Royal Association of Belgian Plastician Artists" and the Director of "ART+SCIENCE” in France.  ART+SCIENCE is a French not-for-profit organization that aims to facilitate dialogue between artists, scientists and educators who are interested in the connections between art and cognition.

About Policarpo Ribeiro: The art of Policarpo Ribeiro are works of his spirit’s journey – as lived, examined and lived again. Each work shares with us a memory of his examination, giving us the sense of his life. He takes us down the pathway of his journey – through self-examination and discovery. Self-taught, his work is based on experimentation and research into his creative capabilities. His work is known nationally in Brazil as he was recently honoured in a book entitled 10 Brazilian Artists. He has also exhibited internationally in Spain, the United States and France as a 2006 Brazilian Laureate of the Academy of Arts, Sciences and Letters in France. He has been a teacher and coordinator of the arts at the Suzano cultural center since 1990.  He introduced curriculum that enabled their low income students to develop mixed media techniques that incorporated alternative and everyday materials. This contributes to stimulating concepts of reutilization or recycling, allowing the students of art to approach ecological and social questions.  In 2006 he offered the “Journey of the Spirit” teacher training workshop for Miami Dade public school teachers at the Art & Art History Department's Sculpture Studio in conjunction with Latin American and Caribbean Center at FIU.  He will be returning later this year to offer the workshop again.

Curator: Tonietta A. Walters is the CEO of The Arts Office Network in Lauderhill, FL. A visual artist and member of Mensa, she has a BA in Philosophy and an MA in Liberal Studies with a specialization in Art and Cognitive Science, both from FIU. Her paintings and sculpture can be found in public and private collections in the US, Brazil, Middle East and France. She has participated in group and solo exhibitions in Brazil, France, India, Poland and the US.  Tonietta teaches Philosophy for Miami Dade Virtual College and is currently working on the correlations between her recently synthesized model of creative practice to current theories in Philosophy of Mind. She is the curator for the ART+SCIENCE Flow exhibition series.  'Flow' will next be shown in June 2009 as a part of the Exploring Consciousness Exhibition in Hong Kong in conjunction with the 2009 Toward a Science of Consciousness Conference.
